Diabetes is a disease that affects many millions of people around the world. It is not uncommon for us to know someone that has either diabetes, or prediabetes. It is a chronic and very debilitating disease where the body either cannot produce insulin, or, cannot properly use the insulin that it does produce. Insulin is a hormone in our body that works to control the amount of glucose found in the blood. This disease can lead to high blood sugar levels in the body, increasing the risk of damage to our blood vessels, organs and nerves. What we eat can play an important role in helping to treat diabetes. One food that has been found to be beneficial for diabetes is bitter gourd. Lets discuss the benefits of bitter gourd for diabetes, what makes it effective and how to make it. Please note, if you have diabetes or symptoms of the disease, please also consult your medical practitioner for further treatment.
Bitter gourd is often classified as both a fruit and a vegetable since it has characteristics of both. It is not the most popular food however because of its unpleasant taste to most individuals. True to its name, it is said to have a very bitter taste. Though it may not be the best tasting, it is renowned for its many health benefits, especially those associated with diabetes. There are a number of ways bitter gourd may be able to help with diabetes.
1. First, bitter gourd is effective in lowering blood glucose levels. More importantly, it can be effective for facilitating glucose metabolism through out our entire body, rather than just one specific organ or tissue. This is because bitter gourd contains two important compounds known as charatin and momordicin, both of which can play an important role in lowering blood sugar levels.
2. Bitter gourd can also be effective in the treatment if type 1 diabetes since it may help increase pancreatic insulin secretion. Type 1 diabetes is generally caused by the failure of the pancreas to produce appropriate amounts of insulin to prevent blood sugar spikes. As well, bitter gourd contains polypeptide P, an insulin-like molecule that may help lower blood sugar levels in type 1 diabetics.
3. It can also improve carbohydrate digestion. Bitter gourd inhibits enzymes the can lead the to reduction of glucose released into the blood. It can be effective in this way for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes since this has an effect on glucose transport channels. This can be quite beneficial to prevent blood sugar level spikes after your meal.
4. Lastly, bitter gourd has tremendous antioxidant properties which may benefit those individuals suffering from diabetes. As mentioned early, high levels of sugar concentration in the blood can damage the blood vessels and organs, in addition to increasing the risk of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It can also lead to increased risk of oxidation and inflammation through out the entire body, stroke, kidney disease and heart attacks. Through bitter gourd’s tremendous antioxidant properties, it may help prevent these risks and lower blood sugar levels.
You should try to consume bitter gourd each morning consistently on an empty stomach before you consume your breakfast. Wash the bitter gourd thoroughly. Cut it into fine, small pieces. Put the pieces into a bowl and add a small amount of salt to them. Mix well and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Salt is optional. Holding the bitter gourd pieces in your hands, you can squeeze and extract the juices. You can now either drink this juice as it, adding some lemon juice and turmeric, or you can add it to your favourite healthy green smoothie recipe.
Please note, as mentioned earlier, also discuss with your doctor if you are experiencing diabetes or prediabetes symptoms for further treatment.
